Nymfes

Home | Map Points | Nymfes

Nymfes village is located in the northern part of Corfu island and considered to be one of the more picturesque villages ,it is built on the side of a small valley of Mount Pantocrator at an altitude of 200 meters. The unique vegetation of olive groves, tall cypresses, oaks and plane trees, as well as the numerous streams, create a unique environment. According to a local legend, the settlement’s waterfalls(unique in Corfu) got its name because nymphes (fairies) used to bathe there in antiquity. Nymfes’ settlement is built according to the standards of typical Corfiot architecture with built-in arches and has been influenced by the Venetians, the French and the British. Amongst the rich flora stands out the unique Kumquat , the tiny Japanese mandarin that is only naturally cultivated in this area and nowhere else in Europe! The fertile soil, the mild climate and the abundance of water are the main factors that favored their growth. Corfu produces about 140 tones kumquat every year. Kumquat is protected by the European Union as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) product.
